    the morning after...

Houston Texas in the middle of July in an outdoor venue, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING! They were obviously thinking very clearly! You forget how good a band like DM can sound until you hear them at an outdoor venue such as this.

As Angie and I were walking up to the arena I swore I had never heard of Poe, the opening act before. I tell a lie! While I did not recognize one song they played I had heard and seen them on an Audiofile special on TechTV. Poe was quite good lot's of energy and had a very DM like sound, overall a good choice for an opener.

After Poe left the stage roadies swapped the stage over, the crowd crammed in and sun went down. There was an intro tape playing on the P.A. system on the arena and as that got louder and louder you eventually realized that it was now coming through the concert system speakers, then the lights went out, the stage became bathed in a blood red light Easy Tiger was playing at full volume when Martin came out on stage and broke into an instrumental of Dream On. The crow was at fevered pitch at this point and with the crowd standing you could see just how many fans they still draw. As the rest of the band silently fell in to place they broke out into a very pumped up version of The Dead Of Night and David Gahan TOOK the stage and the crowd! He danced, he twirled, he sang and proved he one of the best front men in the world. They play songs from Exciter during the first half of the show but mixed in some familiarity with Walking In My Shoes. The show was a bit slow at first but had some stellar moments, during Waiting For The Night To Fall an effective background image of falling raindrops was showing on the very large screen behind the band and a very powerful version of Freelove showed that David's voice hasn't lost a tick. The show picked up steam and soon the crowd was singing and dancing to the likes of Enjoy The Silence, I Feel You and an excellent I Feel Love. The band wrapped it up with Personal Jesus and the crowd doing the now DM staple arm waving. After the obligatory encore cheering they came out with Martin doing Home and David doing Clean and then a surprise to most of the crowd a fresh rendition of Black Celebration(my personal highlight of the show). Finally to end the encore they played Never Let Me Down Again as they slowly left the stage.

Overall the concert was very good, DM sounds as good or better than they do on their recordings. The heat which I thought was going to be a factor was not and there was not one bug in site. I enjoyed the diverse crowd, and it was diverse, and left feeling very satisfied. I guess I'll start the countdown now for the next DM concert here... i.am.sam
