Today my blog entry is coming from GDS! I started my new job today. It's so good to go back to a place your comfortable at. Anyway on with it... I owe you huys a few links I think.
Sorry about the non-entry yesterday, I was geeking out with my new Vader Saber. It is sooooo nice. You see I was a fortunate soul, Star Wars and the hype with it came out when I was 10 years old. On top of that my mom took my sister and me to see it at the Galleria movie theater. We were at a new theater in the middle of the day and there was a huge crowd. I remember being slightly aware of some hype about the movie and the fact that mom had to buy the movie tickets well in advance of us going in. She had never had to do that before and boy that added to the anticipation. When we finaly went in the only thing in the lobby or entrance to the theater was a black poster with the words "...a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" and the Star Wars logo on it... ie. no pictures so I still did not know what I was in for. The movie started, the words scrolled by, the princess' ship is being fired on and then IT happened, the Vader Star Destroyer passed overhead, and it kept going and going and going... WOW! I was so slam hooked at that point! I still get a chill watching that opening sequence. At that point no 8 year old could have resisted, here was the definitive wild west movie of my young generation, it had bad guys in black and good guys in white and vice versa. It had magic, wonder, and far off fantastical places. It had the supreme struggle for good and evil and it had LIGHTSABERS!
Now just like every fad in the world eventualy it dies out. you can probably thank Lucas for the marketing engine that exists today. Toys and playing card and everything else kept the phenom going for some time for me but eventually it faded and passed. During that whole time that I "LOVED" Star Wars, what I really wanted was a lightsaber. I saw one a special effects mag not long after the movie was out. It looked real and they talked like it was real and as a 9 or 10 year old I wanted it to be real, but there was no way. It was going to take 100 or more lawn jobs to save the money for that so like every other kid in America I spent my money on X-Wings, action figures and playing cards.
Zoom ahead, I'm now 16, I can drive a car, girls have replaced the force along time ago and I am exploring the city of Houston.(it was a big deal for us Baytonians to "go to Houston") Anyway I found a comic book shop called Third Planet Comics. I stopped in one afternoon just to see what it was about. I walked in saw the comics everywhere and different kinds of playing cards and then I spotted them, old Star Wars playing cards, "you know I still have mine" I thought and wandered over and started browsing through them. I remember the rush of nostalgia I felt standing in that store. It was a very pleasant feeling, then, I spotted it. They had a real lightsaber in a case on display! OMG! I was stunned by the feeling of need and want that resurfaced. Of course now I was working and not mowing lawns for a living, but it was not for sale. I left thinking how can I possible get one, I never figured it out, until...
I recently decided to build a theater in my house. I wanted to display some movie stuff ala Planet Hollywood around the theater, so turned to the same place I turn to for everything these days, the internet. When I started trying to think of things I wanted, Luke's Lightsaber was the first thing that came to mind, along with other movie items like the T2 Head and Arm and maybe the Noisy Cricket and the Neuralizer. So I searched and you know what there were others out there who wanted these things too, and some of them actually made them! It turns out that alot of the Star Wars props were everyday off the shelf items that had been doctored up. The saber I wanted was made from an old camera flash. So I tried and tried to get that flash on ebay and elsewhere and I always got beat out. Then I found a prop builders bulletin board. There was a guy on there that was going to try to make a Luke saber from the first movie.(ANH) I signed up immediately. Four long months later the Fedex man dropped it off. It was beautiful. I still get a rush just holding it in my hand. So I guess the Star Wars thing never left me. Is that geeky? Then so be it. Some people read to get away from reality for a little while, some go to the movies, go to the casino or surf the internet. I just grab my saber and close my eyes for a few seconds and... i.am.jedi
I know long time no bloggy... well I've been busy and sick so back off. Anyway I have decided to take a position with GDS starting monday. We'll see how it goes. I am so happy to get off the no money spending routine. I have not bought any DVDs or gone out to eat in 4 weeks now! ohhh the horraaah!
Those guys over at Call for Help on TechTv have put out a geek link list. It has some good links like PocketPCThoughts.com and Slashdot. Anwyay if you are looking for good link list, other than my blog, click CFH Net Resources for good geeky list!
So so football today what a yawner... anyway my friend R got Dish network this weekend. I have been a DirectTV guy forever but I must admit I was impressed. Oh man I am excited I am going to get my Vader ANH saber this week! Now just need a way to display them. Anyone have a suggestion?
Click this and look closely at the hallway... sometimes you have to kinda stare at it for a 30 seconds or so.
You guys know I am a huge Tron fan by now. The director of Tron, Steve Lisberger, is going to be on The ScreenSavers on TechTV on Tuesday night in case any of you care...maybe he'll talk about killerapp.com or Tron 2.0!
Do any of you remember the video game Tapper? Now you can play online! Go here then find Bartender, to cool!
Another day another day... nothing new to report today except I am now going into the weekend empty handed. I have contacted GDS, the place I worked before I got the insanity that was moving on about the internet and I will be talking to them on Monday.
Does anyone believe bin laden is dead? I don't, and I hope we don't find him so we can use that as an excuse to go on and blow up some more terrorist camps.
Well the long running X-Files is finally calling it quits. I have to say it is time. I loved the early days of the X-Files(Mr.Squishy Man aka Tooms ohhhyeaaa) but like all shows(except the Simpsons) they started exploring the characters and got them wrapped up in some long winded storyline. I like having things go from week to week but keep true to your roots. Look at the Simpsons they are just funny Bart has not grown up and Lisa still does the same thing she always did. It's funny! Anyway let's hope Mulder comes back for one last episode. That would be the tits!
Are you sick and tired of the damn X-10 ad that pops up all the damn time. Well then this site is for you. It lets you opt out of all of the more poular popup ads out there... I don't know how well it works but here's to hope!
Are you a wintel machine user? Are you scared of the Mac? I kinda want one of those new iMacs with the DVD burner in it! Wintel owners truth about Mac myths. Read it and weep... I still like my wintel machine.
Holy crap it's getting closer, they are developing an exoskelton you will wear that will help run faster and jump further... Look out Steve Austin!
you may now return to your yahoo games I mentioned yesterday...i.am.SAM
Another day another long job search... uggg I found out today that I should qualify for $320/week for unemployment. So at least I can pay for my COBRA on my health insurance. They also have plans for education so I may try to get a CERT out of this if it drags on to long. I am however getting to spend even more time with Dade than normal and I do like that. It will make extra bad though when i don't have Fridays off anymore. DAMN!
let's get some links going... The next biggerest thing... technolust heaven... geek nirvana, or cruel hoax you tell me.
Ok I know ratemypoo was over the top but sometimes you need to get that slap with a big fish...ok I know some of you sit around do nothing but look at porn all day, so if you'd like something else to waste your time try Yahoo Games. There is a ton of great stuff here and many are VERY addictive so watch out...
My friend S sent me this... WTF? prosopagnosia is a face blindness... very strange....
ahhh that's enough... I'm going to watch my new American Pie 2 DVD... i.am.sam
This sitting at home stuff is for the birds! I need to work, if I don't get something soon I am going to have to start something on my own. On a light note I had a ton of fun trying to teach Dade to rollerskate today. He busted his ass about a hundred times but he a real trooper... he just kept at it. He tends to roller walk more than roller skate but he'll get it sooner or later.
One link only today... ooey gooey one too... www.ratemypoo.com, I think the name says it all...i.am.samu
Had an interview today with placement agency... It didn't go that well... low pay and the job was in the Woodlands. Anyway it looks like my insurance will run out in about 24 hours so that is always fun... you know I just don't feel like talking about it anymore.
Couple of quick links... This is a really cool flash clock!
Well I'm back from Vegas and only $400 in the hole... not bad. I saw a ton of cool profucts at the CES show and got to have a little fun to. I will say that being unemployed sure did make the losing hurt a bit more. Anyway on with a real blog entry for a change!
I'm sure you've all seen this but the iMac just came out with a new version of itself complete with a DVD burner! It looks very cool... See it!
Alot of you know I'm a big fat TiVo head! I just love it! Well TiVo unvieled a new version of the TiVo. It was not the best thing I saw there, but it may be the first I buy!
The Moxie Media Center was pretty damn cool... I kinda wonder if they can pull it off at the price point they have set but we'll see. It will converge TiVo like functionality along with MP3 and many other things to a single box that will communicate wirelessly via 802.11a to all of the other TVs in your house... yes all of them... imagine a do it all entertainment center that does not have wires and that is what they are shooting for... all at $300-$400... yea right!
My personal favorite thing I saw was the Hiptop. It's a cell phone, PDA, and a GSM/GPRS web data phone. It has a very cool interface with a keyboard and snap in camera. What does it do? Well use it a as a phone, or surf the web with a browser that actually looks right. Take a quick picture and beam it to someone via email instantly. It's small and are you ready for this it's only $200 with a $30 monthly UNLIMITED DATA stream and 500 minutes of talk time! This is very cool!
Well that is enough for now... anyone have any work for me? I am looking!
